Sump Pump Care Checklist for Elgin, IL Homes
Watching how a sump pump behaves can reveal a problem before the basement takes on water. These checks use only your eyes and ears, never wiring, and do not replace a plumber's test.
Look into the pit
Check that the pump stands upright with the pit clear of debris.
Run a water test
Pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch the float rise, the pump start and stop.
Listen to the check valve
Listen for a thump or water running back into the pit after the pump stops, which can mean a worn check valve. Do not open the valve.
Follow the discharge line
Walk to the outlet after the pump runs and make sure water flows freely, away from the foundation.
Check the backup pump
Test the backup pump, note its battery date and keep the alarm audible. If the pump acts differently or a symptom returns, call about a sump pump test.
